Peter had claimed he was ready to fight to the death for Christ, and indeed he demonstrated that in the garden.  What he had never understood was the way of the cross.  He opposed the atonement, and he was unready to suffer meekly.  In light of what God expected of him, he was wholly unable, and his pride ended in the humbling fall of his denials.
