All
of Grace
Author:
Charles Spurgeon
Description:
“Those who hope to be saved by trying
their best, know nothing of that glowing fervor, that
hallowed warmth, that devout joy in God that come with
salvation freely given according to the grace of God”.
What a wonderful reminder for all of us from Charles
Spurgeon, in his hundred year old book All of Grace. In
the book, Spurgeon walks you through what God has done
and why He did it. Then he elaborates on what we must do
to be saved and to persevere in the faith.
While John Murray’s book
Redemption: Accomplished and
Applied (one of our books of the month from last year)
does an excellent job of conveying the divine mechanics
of salvation, Charles Spurgeon’s All of Grace captures
it’s glorious grandeur with a heart warming depiction of
what it means to be saved. The book is actually a
collection of sermons by the 19th century Reformed
Baptist pastor known to many as the Prince of Preachers.
These sermons spoke specifically on the topic of the
grace of God for the eternal salvation of man; they were
compiled and published in 1894 (two year after his
death) and the book is still in print today.
Like John Murray, Spurgeon explains in no uncertain
terms how it is that salvation is the work of the Lord,
from start to finish. But along the way, the book gives
useful advice related to things that you can (and
should) do. The reader will find sections on dealing
with their weaknesses, handling the fear of falling
away, understanding what it means to submit to God, ways
to increase faith, and advice for dealing with the
self-righteousness that creeps into all of our lives.
In this day of religious pluralism and postmodern
redefinition of age-old Christianity, All of Grace
explains for you what exactly ‘faith’ is. Can you define
it? Think about it. How can you be sure that you have
true saving faith? Much of the book covers biblically
defined ‘faith’, and explains it’s three aspects:
knowledge, belief, and trust. But in what or in who?
These are some of the most important questions that can
be asked and answered, and Spurgeon spends his time in
this book - doing just that.
It is for that reason that you will find All of Grace to
be, not only a book that helps you in your walk with
God, but it’s also one of those rare books that doubles
as an effective evangelism tool. In addition to Peter
Jeffery’s book From Religion To Christ (another of our
previous month’s books), Charles Spurgeon’s book is
another that could be instrumental in helping those
friends and relatives who are bound by mainstream
religions, which tend to place so much focus on man’s
own works. While Sprurgeon’s communication style can not
be duplicated, his book and Peter Jeffery’s are similar
in their focus on the God-given new heart that we are
given when we are born again.
While some of our other books of the month are geared
towards more mature believers, All of Grace is a book
for everyone, with it’s simple language, word pictures,
short chapters, and a description of the Gospel that
even a child should understand. Teenagers, older
believers, and even unbelievers as I’ve already
mentioned, can all benefit from this ageless book which
deserves a special place in your personal library and in
the hands of your friends and family members.
Those of you who do a lot of driving might also be
